Week 3 | Tweet Me Like I Should: Exploring Communication in the Virtual World

The Future of Communication. John Ian as a 'humanoid' representing communication and technology in sync.
Communication revolution is now trending worldwide. We live in the world of endless innovation and communication is just a plain shadow behind it.

At present times, communication is said and done in all aspect, in any way people can imagine. As we take part of this technological advancement, we humans, can now interconnect to the rest of the world in real time. There is more to communication than talk or gesture. The power of communication is just right at our fingertips. The birth of the internet has a big impact on the way people communicate between one or more person disregarding the distance and style. The new media affects the way people live and communicate, and how they intend to receive messages from the source. Way back in 1989 when Tim Berners Lee together with Robert Cailliau proposed to build the Hypertext Project popularly known today as world wide web, it gradually changed the way people interact especially those who were born during the internet generation. Yes, I am an internet baby. I was born during the internet revolution and today, I seize everything technology has to offer. From the iPad and Android-powered smartphones, to the wireless fidelity services and global positioning system, communication is conveyed in all media platforms. The development of internet expands so fast yet people all over the world changed the way they say “hi” and “hello” and how they express themselves for several reasons. Some people expose their talents via video sharing networking sites as well as the style how individual or group of individuals persuade the masses to join a certain advocacy. This is the nature of communication in the 21st century, fierce and constant.

Social networking tools have stolen the mass media’s function—to play a role in most trending topics and feed the community with the latest information. Today, the word “public” is not defined as public as it was. It may now integrate as a millions of individuals that share unique interests and behavior intertwined into complex networks. Even in just a minute, these technology-based tools can cause epidemics among large population through communication channels. Social networking became a necessity among modern people. The people, especially those belong to the internet generation find new ways to communicate, share common goals and ideas, disseminate information and search for the new trends. Web-based social networking services serve as a virtual bridge for sharing interests, likes and activities among modern-day individuals. Through e-mail, instant messaging and the formation of online communities, these services ease the communication habit in a large population. The Philippines, as the virtual hub for internet hobbyist, is one of the most active in the world and yet, tagged as “Social Networking Capital of the World” reported by the Universal McCann in which 83% of the Filipinos surveyed were member of a social network. The Filipinos that belong to the internet generation find social media as passage to a new world. This is an indication how technology has changed the game in communication. Facebook and Twitter, the leading networking sites has millions of followers around the world, including me. I generate ten to twenty tweets from sunrise to sunset and posts an average of ten status updates per day. True to its intentions, social networking sites made me vulnerable if not connected to the virtual world. Communication during technological evolution doesn’t only change the way it was conveyed, but also it paves the way how new words, jargons and lingos are constructed and used everyday. This is the nature of communication in our present day, and may be tomorrow, it will be another story.

Bottom-line: In our hand lies the power to act, express and connect with people through the new media. The power of communication over technology-based tools requires deep sense of responsibility.
